The Bronx, NY is home to many notable universities. Here are some that have put their stamp on educational in the Bronx for many years.

Fordham University

Fordham has the distinction of being the first Catholic College in the Northeast. It’s also the third oldest University in the state. It was founded as St. John’s College in 1841. Officially, it’s now an independent university. It has an 85-acre campus in the Bronx. Known as Rose Hill, it’s among the largest in the city.Since 1969, it’s no longer officially governed by the church. However, Fordham has had a Jesuit priest as president since 1846, and the Jesuit educational principles remain in effect today. You will find approximately 15,300 students from 65 countries enrolled in Fordham at any given time.

The City University of New York

Hostos Community College, Bronx Community College, and Lehman College are all Bronx campus locations of the City University of New York, also known as CUNY. It has the distinction of being known as the biggest urban university system in the United States. CUNY has a very diverse student body, more diverse than most other schools in the country.  Students from 208 countries attend university here. Hispanic, African American and Caucasian undergraduates each comprise more than a fourth of the entire student body. Asian undergraduates comprise 18 percent.  It’s interesting to note that 57 percent of students are female, and 28 percent are over the age of 25.

The College of Mount Saint Vincent

The College of Mount Saint Vincent is under the direction of the Sisters of Charity of New York. It was founded in 1847 as a school for girls. It became a college that granted degrees in 1911. In 1974, they began admitting men. Today, this Catholic liberal arts college shares its campus with the Academy for Jewish Religion.

Manhattan College

This Catholic college is a great place to go for an undergraduate degree in the arts, science, engineering, education, or business. They offer graduate degrees in engineering, business, and education.It was started in 1853 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools, was originally located in Manhattan. It moved in 1922 to the Bronx. They get good ratings, consistently, for one of the best colleges that have a good return on education investment.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine

This medical school is part of the Montefiore Medical Center. The Albert Einstein College of Medicine is located in the Bronx.It focuses on medical education, clinical research, and basic research. They offer course study towards your M.D. degree, and they also grant biomedical graduate degrees.

Monroe College

At Monroe College, which is a private college, the course of study focuses on readiness for business and professional work. They started in the Bronx in 1933, and have campuses in the Bronx’s Fordham neighborhood, as well as one in Westchester County.

The State University of New York Maritime College

Located on the grounds of Fort Schuyler, The State University of New York Maritime College leads the nation in maritime education. The Maritime Industry Museum is located in Fort Schuyler as well. It’s interesting to note that as of this writing in 2017, people that graduate from this university earn the highest annual salary of any other college graduates in the country. This average annual salary is $144,000.
